A beautiful vigil tonight for the lives of lost refugees, and a silent protest against the unfathomable inhumanity that is the current Australian government's treatment of those seeking safety in this beautiful country. We here tonight represented many more Australians who would welcome them here, especially at this time of great need. In such a privileged place, it can be hard to imagine just how horrific the circumstances of war must be to force these people into that corner of desperation, where they must choose between a slim chance of life and certain harm or even death. For their plight, every small action counts - the changing conversation about refugees as humans with stories, rather than political ammunition, following the worldwide outpouring of love for little #AylanKurdi is a good start. Change has to start somewhere, and the lights we ignited tonight are symbolic of the light in our hearts, amongst the darkness of blindness, prejudice, fear and selfishness that unfortunately we humans can sometimes all too easily succumb to. #lightthedark #refugeecrisis #realaustralianssaywelcome @getup_australia thank you for initiating this very moving event 🌟🌟🌟
